About us
Who we are
Becoming Trauma Informed Hull was started by Hull’s Changing Futures Programme. It now has a long-term home with the council’s Public Health team. We have a steering group with leads from organisations that include -
- Hull City Council
- Humberside Police
- Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (Hull Place)
- Humber NHS Teaching Foundation Trust
- Forum
- An Untold Story - Voices
Our wider network meets every few months. They are the people who are making the difference in our city every day.
Our vision
Hull is pioneering an approach that includes all people, communities, and services to jointly create a city that truly works for all. A city where we start with people and communities - and create together.
We want a city where everyone can feel safe and have a sense of belonging and purpose. All individuals and families deserve to have their basic needs met. We want them to be well enough to take up the opportunities they choose and be free to enjoy social and cultural expression.
We endeavour to support everyone that needs help in the way that works best for them and create environments that help people to thrive.
This is what our Trauma Informed City aspires to be.
Becoming Trauma Informed Hull background
There is overwhelming evidence that childhood trauma, without the right support, can both physically and emotionally disrupt a child’s development. It can lead to lasting impact on their wellbeing and ability to thrive, both as a child and an adult in everyday life.
People with unresolved childhood trauma are more likely to suffer from poor –
- physical health
- mental health
- social health
We know that societal and environmental adversities, from poverty and inequity to racism and climate change, can cause and increase trauma.
Everyone deserves to be protected from trauma or to receive the help they need to recover. We can use this learning to become a city that recognises, prevents, and addresses the systemic, environmental, and individual causes of adversity across all age ranges and communities. We want to achieve this by tackling barriers and providing services that enable healing.
This makes sense from both a human and an economic perspective. This approach around prevention and recovery is more cost effective than doing nothing.
Hull has a history of pioneers, of overcoming adversity, and pulling together to support each other. With this new way of thinking, we can transform Hull into even more of the amazing place we know it can be for every single human living here.
